Holiday Comforts

When the opportunity presented itself to write a post about Holiday Comforts, I knew I wanted to be amongst them as I have several traditions which are important to me to create the festive spirit of Christmas.

This past weekend with all of it's busy-ness sums up the traditions I keep.

1. Advent Wreaths
I am by no means a devout Catholic so my Advent Wreath isn't for holy reasons, it's purely out of tradition. I grew up with one and it brings me back to my childhood.

2. Advent Calenders
I've already said it once, but I will NEVER be too old to have one!

 Last year's Advent calender.

3. Baking
Despite loving it, I just don't bake..for a myriad of reasons except for at Christmas time.

I was gifted a Kitchen Aide this past year from Nate's grandma, and I busted it out this past weekend.

I have no clue how I survived these past years without one. After 5-6 hours of baking Saturday, I had 3 batches of cookies made and today I found out I can use a dough hook for my "kneaded" doughs. I dread those the most and put those off since they take longer!

Here is the first batch... the pretzel rolo's and the coconut bars are the crowd pleaser so far!

from left to right: rolo pretzels, spritz cookies, bear claws, and coconut bars

3. Nikolaus
Nikolaus usually kicks off the Season for me and this year was no different. It was actually a bit more important than usual as Nate is going to be gone for the rest of the month...

This year's theme was Winter Wonderland.. (which I also carried into my advent wreath!)

I'll be posting more about my cakes later this week, but another picture of the igloo cake.
